About us

The Arc Nursery has 59 childcare places for children aged between 3 months and 5 years. We are a charitable organisation and the nursery itself is overseen by a board of trustees, which is made up of a group of parents who have or have had their children attend the nursery (for more information on this please see ‘Who Are ACT’).

The nursery has sole use of a detached, two storey period building which boasts an outdoor garden on the ground floor and a natural roof garden where the children have access to our mud kitchen, pond and planting allotment. Both of which, the children have a chance to use daily throughout the year.

All children are provided with nutritious home cooked meals which are cooked on site by our own chef. We regularly take the children on outings to local parks and attractions, and on various trips throughout the year to places of interest such as farms/museums. This allows them to explore and learn about particular subjects and enables us to give them the best learning experiences available.

The nursery is open from 8am-6pm throughout the year, although it is closed for all Bank holidays and three inset days per year for staff training.

In our setting, we are committed to the continuous professional development of our staff, which in turn benefits the children by improving the quality of childcare we offer.

We have a Nursery Manager who is supported by a deputy manager and each room has a designated Room Leader.  The nursery follows the Government’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, that is laid down by Ofsted and supports all our policies and procedures that are updated on a regular basis.

The nursery operates closed circuit television, please see our policies page for more information.

OUR ETHOS & POLICIES

We are committed to creating a child led play environment, which offers exciting and challenging educational activities to support and extend children’s learning and development.

We use the mosaic approach in our learning, ensuring that the children’s interests and views are incorporate in both the planning and activities provided.

We understand that the care and education of young children requires a professional knowledge of both child development and learning theory and through working in partnership with our parents, we can provide the best service for your child.

We strive for the children at the Arc to be independent, which in turn develops their self esteem and self confidence. Enabling them to build successful relationships with others and to be well prepared for their transition into school.

WHO ARE ACT?

The Arc Nursery is overseen by the Arc Community Trustees, (ACT) a governing body composed of current and former parents.

ACT took over the running of the nursery from Charterhouse-in-Southwark in March 2009, as Charterhouse-in-Southwark no longer wished to run the nursery and were going to sell the building. In 2010 ACT secured sufficient funding to allow the nursery to be refurbished, permitting it to become a completely child focused and child centred building.

ACT’s charitable aims are:

  • Work with families and others to preserve the Arc as a source of excellent childcare and early learning for children aged under 5 in the local community, so they are ready to thrive when they go to school.
  • Expand the opportunities the Arc offers to help children be healthy, stay safe, enjoy and achieve, make a positive contribution, and achieve economic well being.
  • Manage the Arc to cater for all children, including those who are especially vulnerable.
  • Help parents who need it to obtain financial support available for childcare and be able to give some help ourselves.
